And We're Back

Would you look at that! It’s a blog.

One of the main reasons I hadn’t been writing is that the static site generator I had been using (you don’t need Wordpress! A database just means you can get hacked! This is all flat html!) made images… not great? It was loading the full size image each page load. So I switched to Hugo, which in theory processes them for lazy loading. I’m not sure if the theme I’m using actually does that, but it feels snappier. I’d like a more image-friendly theme, but after a day of trying various ones out, Poison works and that’s enough for me!

And I have a lot to write about:

  • I was a Troop Guide at Wood Badge (10-380-24-1): you should do Wood Badge if you’re a scouter!
  • I was the Assistant Scoutmaster of Program at NYLT: you should do NYLT if you’re a scout!
  • Our troop is gearing up for our Philmont trek next summer

The last bullet has been where I’ve been spending most of my free time: Philmont has strict weight requirements, and while BMI is a flawed metric it’s the rules I have to play by. And by those metrics I had about 40 pounds to lose 😬

Right now that means calorie restriction and running. For the former, that largely means cutting out snacking1. For the latter, I’ve started a couch to 5k program again. As an Apple Watch user, Watch to 5k is great: at its heart a C25K program is just a bunch of intervals, but this is cheap and does it for you! Plus I get to take my dog Mabel for runs, which she loves.

Mabel!

…even if she gets as tired as me by the end.

  1. And alcohol, which I keep completely separate from scouting, so even mentioning it feels weird! But those Double IPAs add up. ↩︎
